Chandler Smith Wins Pole Award and Finishes Fifth in ARCA Debut

Concord, North Carolina (April 9, 2018) – Fifteen-year old rookie driver Chandler Smith from Talking Rock, Ga. wasted little time introducing himself to the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.

Smith, the latest teenage sensation to jump onto the scene, came out of the gate strong Saturday earning General Tire’s Pole Award and finishing fifth in his first series appearance driving for Toyota aligned Venturini Motorsports in ARCA’s Music City 200 at the half-mile Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville.

“It was a great night and huge learning experience,” said Smith. “As a driver I’m disappointed I couldn’t finish it off but winning the pole and finishing fifth in my first ARCA start is something I’m really proud of and can build on for the future. I can’t thank Toyota and Venturini Motorsports enough for giving me the opportunity and the chance to make my first start here on my home track.”

Smith, a standout late model driver, set a new track record (18.768 seconds / 114.332 mph) with his ARCA qualifying effort and led the first 51-laps behind the wheel of his No.20 Smith General Contracting Camry. Relinquishing his lead during the first round of pit stops, Smith stayed in contention never straying outside the top-8 cars before finishing with a solid top-5.

“Venturini Motorsports gave me a great car and Billy (Venturini) on the pit box really helped me with the adjustments I needed to make in the ARCA car. These cars are a lot different than the late model cars I’ve been driving. Understanding how the car reacts to changes and providing solid feedback is important to putting together a full race. As good as we were tonight I’m confident in my ability to get better the next time out.”

Smith won’t have to wait long for his next shot as the high school sophomore will be back behind the wheel when ARCA returns to action at Salem Speedway on Sunday, April 22.

Smith, a member of Toyota Racing’s TD2 program, will make a total of six ARCA starts with VMS throughout the 2018 season. After Salem, Smith will visit Toledo Speedway (May 20), Iowa Speedway (July 7), Lucas Oil Raceway (September 7) and Salem Speedway (September 15).
